Queens Arcade reports footfall growth following a turbulent period immediately following the opening of St David’s Shopping Centre
The opening of St David’s created an extra 1million sq ft of retail space in the centre of Cardiff; launching the city into the top 6 retail destinations in the UK. Whilst this has clearly had an effect on the retail hierarchy in the city, the additional footfall that the development has attracted from outside areas has more than compensated Queens Arcade. Located between St David’s and Queen Street, Queens Arcade predicted that it would benefit from the opening of St David’s as early as June last year. These predictions were backed up by specialist retail research company Javelin who asserted that Queen Street would remain popular, especially at the Western end, and Queens Arcade would therefore benefit by being a conduit between the two. The opening of Wales’ first John Lewis Store in September 2009 had an immediate impact on Queens Arcade and the city as a whole. Footfall at Queens Arcade increased by 12% on the previous week and the city centre’s monthly footfall rose by a massive 64% compared to the same period in 2008. As St David’s officially opened in October 2009 even larger increases were experienced. Queens Arcade registered a weekly growth of 33% to 300,000 and the city recorded a 66% increased on the same period in 2008. Christmas was particularly strong in 2009 with the city attracting 3.2million customers in December alone. 1.5million of these visited Queens Arcade. Overall, Cardiff City Centre footfall has risen by an average of 45.5% since September 2009 compared to the same period the year before and Queens Arcade is set to reach its predicted target of 13million customers in 2010. Queens Arcade Centre Manager, Nick Beckett, commented “Clearly, the opening of a shopping centre the size of St David’s was going to have an effect on the retail centre of gravity within Cardiff and it’s been interesting to observe the way that it has panned out. “Certainly, some of our customers will have migrated toward St David’s, but the additional footfall from outlying areas that Cardiff is generating has more than compensated for that. This is evidenced by retailers such as New Look and Gap that are trading two stores in the city, one in Queens Arcade and one in St David’s. “Now we’re ten months on from the opening of John Lewis footfall has stabilised for Queens Arcade and we’re on track to reach our average target of 1,100,000 customers per month.”
