By day Katya Mansell works at the Animal store in Queens Arcade; but by night, she is a singer/songwriter who is working hard to raise funds to return to rural Thailand to teach English.

We caught up with her before her planned departure on April 2^nd to find out how she became involved and what makes her tick.

Katya first went to Thailand a couple of years ago on a creative arts team which taught in different schools in the province of Lopburi for a month and “loved it!” She returned six months later to visit friends she had made during her first visit and ended up teaching again. Since then she has completed a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) to enable her to return and teach English for a longer period.

Katya is hoping to raise £1000 so she can support a number of projects as much as possible and has organised a fundraising evening for people who would like to contribute at City Temple, Cowbridge Road East on Saturday 19^th March, starting at 7.30pm. The event will be filled with mainly local acoustic acts (and possibly some hip hop artists as well) performing their own songs as well as covers.

Katya will launch her LP ‘Hello my Heart’ and will be performing some songs from the album. She says she is aiming for a “very chilled out, coffee shop style evening” and hopes that local music lovers and generous Cardiff residents will get behind the event so she can give as much support as possible to the people she will be working with in Thailand.

Katya plans to work for several projects in Thailand including local non-profit organisation ‘Supporting a Brighter Life’ which supports children affected by HIV/Aids in the north of Thailand to go to school. Many families in that area live on the edge of extreme poverty, once the family is then further devastated by HIV/AIDS, spending money on continuing education is no longer an option. Katya hopes to visit some of the children the organisation supports as well as the schools they attend and to “help out in any way that we can.”

Katya is also planning on visiting a drop-in centre for street children supported by a British missionary who has been working with the poor in Thailand for the past 10 years. She will stay with a local family who run a hostel for children who would otherwise live too far from school. The family also runs a host of sustainable projects supporting local people.

Once Katya has worked on these projects she plans to say and teach English for at least six months in the southern region of Pattaya. The region is associated with a high number of those working in and sold to the sex trade. She hopes that by teaching English she can help the students and aims to “give students hope in that they can have a better quality of life.”
