Pop-up Play Shop giving kids and families the freedom to explore their creativity Morgan Leichter-Saxby is an inspirational woman. However, before you think that too many people these days are branded inspirational for what amounts to getting up in the morning or just doing their job, meet Morgan. She is the creator, manager and chief play-maker at the world’s first dedicated Pop-up Play Shop (PUPS) situated on the lower level of Queens Arcade, between New Look and Supercuts. A ‘pop-up play shop’ is a dedicated community space for people of all ages to explore their creativity using the materials provided, free of charge, without interference and however, wherever their imagination takes them. The PUPS opened on 1st October and has entertained visitors to Cardiff from all over Wales and beyond; often hosting parents and children while other members of the family are shopping, visiting the Centre or just those who want to come and play. The scheme is currently open from Thursday to Saturday every week, from 11am to 6pm and will be open during the half term and school holidays. The project has been created in partnership with Re-Create with start-up funding from the Cymorth Small Play Grants Programme. The materials used are almost completely recycled and have been sourced by Re-Create, the scrap store for Cardiff. Re-Create visits factories, craft shops and other businesses seeking useful items that would usually go to landfill and diverts them to creative use. These include items such as green foam (polystyrene) that is not recyclable but which instead becomes an integral part of someone’s seascape, monster or other creation. Morgan is understandably passionate about what she does, “Kids need more opportunities for unstructured play which they can also involve their parents in if they want! “We see ourselves as supporting long-term change in family relationships; giving parents and their children time and space to play together and create something, either together or independently. We want to offer support without leading and attention without intrusion. This is crucial in playwork where there are no fixed ideas from the adults as to the outcome, the kids are in charge and this project gives families the space to do this. This gives children the opportunity to get good at something and have it recognised.” Morgan was inspired to set up the scheme by her background in anthropology which sparked her interest in children’s culture and has been a playworker for five years. While she now lives in Cardiff, she is originally from California and England via New York, where last year she was hosting play-spaces in public spaces, including parks. Indeed she also recently worked with the Play Association Tower Hamlets in just those sorts of community spaces. However this is the first time she has been able to do this in a dedicated indoor shop space for an extended period. Marianne Mannello, Assistant Director at Play Wales which recently hosted the 50th Anniversary International Play Association Conference said, "The Pop-Up Play Shop will support children and parents to make the most of what is often readily available and it will go some way in demonstrating that given time, space and permission, children will play anywhere." Queens Arcade’s Centre Manager Lyndon Gough is also excited by the project, “Being a father myself it is wonderful to see families have the space, time and opportunity to come together to create something meaningful for them, using materials they might never have thought of using and not needing to clear away afterwards! “We are very proud to host the world’s first Pop-up Play Shop and look forward to welcoming more families and their budding creativity to the Centre.
