Olympian to train QA runners

He also uses his sporty frame to make sure Queens Arcade remains an enjoyable attraction for the thousands of customers that visit every day as one of the shopping centre’s security guards.

But now Olympian and former professional rugby league player Mateaki Mafi (Matti) is bracing himself for his biggest challenge yet – training staff from some of Queens Arcade’s stores who are taking part in next month’s HSBC Cardiff 10K Run.

The centre is entering a team in the event’s popular Corporate Team Challenge, which this year includes a record-breaking entry of more than 50 teams from across Wales.

Matti, who finished fifth at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in his opening heat of the 200m against Linford Christie, is already giving staff from Hudson + Hudson, Animal, Tony Pryce Sports, Hawkin’s Bazaar and Scuropody top tips ahead of the Run on Sunday, September 6.

Matti, who also played rugby league for Warrington, said: “I’m so pleased that our retailers have managed to put up nine runners for the Cardiff 10k run. They’re all pretty fit so my job has been quite easy. Races are won a lost in your head, so making sure you have the right attitude, determination and motivation is essential.”

Nick Beckett, Manager of the Queens Arcade, said “It’s fantastic to see our retailers coming together to support such a worthy cause. This type of co-operation is testament to the fantastic relationships that we all have at the Queens Arcade.

“I’m sure that our in house Olympian will be able to offer some invaluable advice and I wish everyone the best of luck.”

Entry prices to the Run are just £16 for affiliated club runners and £18 for non-affiliated runners. All entries receive a free race pack, while the first 3,000 will also receive a free race-day T-shirt.  Medals are awarded to everyone who finishes the race.

For younger runners and families there is the ever-popular HSBC Cardiff 2K Run, which takes place on the same day. More than 500 families took part last year. Entry for this year’s event is just £15 for a family of four, while for local businesses there is the hugely popular corporate team challenge at just £250 per team.
